Learn

This is a protected island located in Fumba ward of Mjini District in Mjini Magharibi Region. The island is included in the marine conservation area of Menai Bay

About the Island

Kwale Island (Swahili: Kisiwa cha Kwale) is located on the western part of Unguja (the main island of Zanzibar), in the Mjini Magharibi District, Mjini Municipality, Fumba District. It is within the Menai Bay Conservation Area.

Snorkeling

Kwale Island lies within the largest marine conservation area in the Grinding Range – Menai Bay, encompassing numerous lagoons, corals, seagrass beds and a diverse ocean ecosystem. It is an important space for coastal flora and fauna.

Sandbank

The „sandbank” is one of the most beautiful phenomena you can witness during a visit to Kwale Island – and undoubtedly one of the highlights of a Safari Blue tour. A sandbank, or sandbar, is a temporary stretch of white sand that appears and disappears depending on the ocean tides.

Fallen Baobab

The baobab, despite being toppled, perhaps by strong winds or a storm, continues to live and grow—often horizontally—making it unique in the world. Baobabs in Zanzibar symbolize time, wisdom, and history, often called „the guardians of time.” Even this fallen specimen holds a sense of cultural sanctity and natural heritage.
