Learn
A tiny, unspoiled island located west of Pemba in the Zanzibar Archipelago. Its coral reefs, bright beaches, and vibrant waters are the essence of this place’s charm. Misali Island (Kisiwa cha Misali) lies about 10 km west of Chake Chake na Pemba and covers an area of approximately 0.9–1 km².
Misali Reserve
According to local folklore, the island was considered a „prayer carpet” (misali in Swahili) when there was nowhere to pray — the island’s northern beach faces Mecca. This message has been used in environmental conservation efforts, with imams quoting the Quran to encourage the protection of coral reefs. Misali is a veritable oasis of biodiversity, home only to the Aloe pembana plant (immortalized by biologists). Endemic species include the Pemba flying fox (a type of fruit bat), vervet monkeys, coconut crabs, various birds, and turtles (green and hawksbill) that come to nest. The reefs around the island are home to over 300 species of fish and some 40 types of coral. Conservation has been underway since 1998, first as the Misali Island Marine Conservation Area and now as part of the Pemba Channel Conservation Area (PECCA). The center operates monitoring programs, including ranger patrols, no-fishing zones, mangrove restoration (over 10,000 trees planted), and support for local residents through education, beekeeping, agritourism, and guide training, all financed, among other things, by tourist fees.
Blue Monkey
Misala is home to a family of blue monkeys. Every morning, they visit Baobab Beach, where you can observe them up close and even offer them some fruit. The Blue Monkey is a monkey from the family Cervidae. It’s not literally „blue” – its fur is gray-brown, with a slightly silvery, bluish sheen in sunlight (hence the name). It has a pale face with a dark nose and a distinct white „beard.” They live in family groups of usually 10-15 individuals, with one dominant male. They feed primarily on fruit, leaves, seeds, and sometimes insects and small vertebrates. They are active mainly during the day, spending much of their time high in the treetops.
Coconut Crabs
The coconut crab is the largest land crustacean in the world – adults can reach up to 40 cm in length and weigh up to 4–5 kg. It has powerful claws that can crack a coconut – hence its name. It also uses them for defense, climbing, and carrying heavy objects. Although it is a crab, it lives on land, spending only its juvenile larval stage in the sea. Adults avoid water – they can even drown in it, because they breathe air through specialized lungs. On Misala, they are found primarily in dense coastal forests and near coconut palms. They are active mainly at night, when they emerge to forage and search for food.
Coral Reef’s
Misali is surrounded by nearly 9 km² of coral reefs, making it one of the most important reef enclaves of its kind in Tanzania. Researchers have described over 300 species of fish and around 40 species of hard corals here. This place is sometimes described as an „underwater garden” – full of colorful corals, sponges, anemones, and a wide variety of marine life. The reefs are „great nurseries” – young fish, crustaceans, and mollusks find shelter there. Among the species found here are barracuda, tuna, snappers, groupers, moray eels, seahorses, octopuses, as well as green and hawksbill turtles, which use the reefs as a dining area. The deeper areas in the Pemba Channel offer the chance to encounter manta rays, dolphins, and even reef sharks.
